A note on Class levels

We have asked instructors to rank their class for its best-suited audience by declaring them Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced. These levels are not meant to discourage, but to help all learners attend courses in which they can be successful.

The descriptions given for each of these levels is below HOWEVER it should be noted that they are not an absolute restriction, especially if taking a class which is more introductory than your own level.

• For example: If you are beyond “beginner level” but want to polish or learn a skill in a class listed as “beginner” you may absolutely attend that class, simply be aware that the instructor may be teaching basics which you already know and have appropriate patience for class pacing.
• We would caution you to have care selecting courses at a more advanced level than your own skill. Instructors will assume some level of knowledge (as indicated below) and will not plan to explain skill basics. These classes may be frustrating for you as a learner. These classes may be reasonable to attend and audit – non hands-on but intending to catch the overall gist of the skill for future learning. You may ask the instructor if you may audit, or if the class might be suitable for your skillset, simply arrive early so as not to disrupt the class start and gracefully accept a decline or a request to audit rather than actively participate. Auditing space may be limited by classroom occupancy limits.

Beginner: This class is suitable for someone who has no prior knowledge of the topic. Classes cover the basic tenants of a topic and teach an overview or the beginning skills needed
Intermediate: This class assumes the student already has basic knowledge of the topic. Instructors will assume the student has some experience and may not include definitions, or use abbreviations/short-hand which those with exposure to the topic would already know. Class topics will not cover basic knowledge and may delve into a specific niche
Advanced: The student has extensive experience with the topic and does not require basic terminology or skills explained. Student has practical knowledge of multiple techniques, styles, or aspects of the topic. Class may be a very niche topic and instructors will expect students to be well-versed in the subject.

Symposium Ball

The return of the Heraldic, Scribal, and Dancing Symposium means the return of the Symposium Ball! It will be a short ball, accompanied by prerecorded music. Set list to be posted shortly. Direct any questions to Wolfram Janssen (m.k.a. Shaun Dignan).

The Symposium Ball is currently planned for 2:00 pm-4:00 pm in the Commons Area.

Ames Area Food Options

There will be no Inn provided, but there are a number of Axed Root approved local restaurants included below. In addition, Delivery services cover the site location fairly well (Doordash, Eatstreet, Uber Eats, etc). There will be a 1 fry or onion ring service charge for any delivery orders where we need to find you when the delivery drivers arrive!
